Murcia airport has an enviable location and as soon as you begin to descend over the vast coastline you will see why. Separating the coastline from the Mediterranean Sea is the largest salt water lagoon in all of Europe, the Mar Menor, which translates as the “Little Sea”. The Mar Menor is a magnet for anything and everything water sports related as it provides the perfect setting and warm waters for all types of water sports. On the other side of the Mar Menor lagoon is the La Manga strip. Made famous over the years, the La Manga strip attracts many tourists to its thin expanse of land that has become quite high rise over time as it offers fantastic views of gorgeous blue waters on both sides.

Murcia San Javier airport has undergone vast transformations over the last few years as the numbers of tourists passing through the terminal continues to rise exponentially. In 2001, 2002 and also 2003, Murcia San Javier airport was the domestic airport in Spain to see the largest growth as far as the passenger numbers are concerned. In 2007 the numbers had grown so much they almost topped 2 million people. These days there are also more and more low cost airlines using Murcia San Javier airport so the numbers will continue to pass through the doors.

Plans for enlarging areas of the airport began in 2004 when the arrivals lounge was greatly increased, adding more seating area and also room for queues as the total of check in desks changed from a handful to 16. Additional luggage carousels were also added and space for retail units was created as well as a hub for the Spanish car hire companies which can be found as you exit the arrivals area and move towards the airport exits.

Landside there is also a café/bar open during normal airport hours that serves hot and cold food as well as a newspaper and souvenirs shop and better toilet facilities have also been added.

Also noticeable was the huge increase in the space allocated for security although unless you find yourself in Murcia airport at the height of summer, the queues are unlikely to take you too long. To make things more interesting the airport was painted a soft pink colour and more retail units were put airside. At the moment there is a duty free shop, a souvenirs shop, a sweet shop, a small café/self service bar and an extremely popular Subway sandwich bar which will always beat the snacks offered on the Ryanair flights!

Once you have checked in, another popular place to go top up the tan with the final rays of Spanish sunshine, is the small kiosk just outside the airport. Many smokers can also normally be found here as in line with regulations, Murcia airport is a non-smoking building. You can purchase snacks, cold drinks and ice lollies while you wait for your departure.

There is a network of roads and carriageways that can be reached a few minutes from the airport making navigation and travel within Murcia very easy, even for those driving on the wrong side of the road for the first time. Getting to Murcia city is just as easy as driving up the coastline to Alicante for example. Alicante car hire can also be booked via our site and we highly recommend you book your Murcia or Alicante car rental in advance.

Murcia Area Guide

With the driving taken care of, we have compiled an overview of what you can expect to find in the beautiful region of Murcia including the best places to shop, the tastiest places to eat, the most picturesque places to visit and the prettiest beaches to sunbathe on.

Murcia region shares its name with the capital city of the area so do take care and remember that the city is approximately 47km from the airport but can easily be reached by driving from the AP7 carriageway to the C-3319. Murcia has a famous cathedral that attracts many visitors to the city centre. Surrounded by little streets with unique shops and pretty squares to have a drink in, Murcia city is not far from Cartagena and can be taken in in the same day.

If you choose to head southwards you can visit the famous city of Cartagena. Rich in culture and history, Cartagena is a pretty port town offering water side bars and restaurants and old cobbled streets steeped in history. Well worth a visit, Cartagena is easy to get to as 2 of the major carriageways in Murcia meet up around the town.

As the road networks are of a good standard in Murcia, car hire is the best and most comfortable way of getting around. Murcia car hire will also allow you to take day trips a bit further away as well as outside of the region, for example, up to the Jumilla areas where many vineyards can be found or down to visit the beaches of Almeria. And as you can pick your Murcia rental car up in one area and drop it in another, there is no reason not to take full advantage of travelling around. In just over 20 minutes you can also drive up to Torrevieja from Murcia airport and so the Murcia car hire will also suit those heading North up the coast with their rental car requirements.

All the way down the East coast you will find fantastic long beaches with beach huts offering refreshments all the way down. The AP7 carriageway will take you from the airport at the northern end of the Mar Menor down the coast passing all the best villages and towns on the coast, for example Los Alcazares which is always a popular town to visit as it is located around mid-way down the lagoon.
