Airport code: MJV

Murcia airport is located on the coast at the northern edge of the Mar Menor lagoon, the largest salt water lagoon in Europe and one of the star attractions within the region. The Mar Menor lagoon is almost landlocked by the La Manga strip, a slim strip of land that has become very high rise over the years and stretches out into the sea from the South Eastern tip of Murcia up to San Javier and the airport. The La Manga strip is an awesome sight that can easily be seen from the plane as you fly down the coastline to Murcia airport.

Murcia San Javier airport has grown considerably over the last few years as the numbers of tourists visiting the region increases and as more and more low cost airlines choose to fly in and out of the Murcia area. In 2001 and for the following 2 years as well, Murcia airport was the national airport to see most growth in terms of passenger numbers and since 2003 the totals have increased even further to 2007 when almost 2 million passengers used Murcia airport throughout the year.

In 2004 the airport modifications began and Murcia airport was expanded, adding necessary space to the arrivals lounge, as well as space for additional baggage carousels, retail units and a much needed area for the Murcia car hire companies to be stationed within the airport. Currently there are 6 Spanish car hire companies with desks inside of Murcia airport and can be seen as you depart the arrivals lounge to the exit.

In 2006 there were further changes to Murcia San Javier airport and more check in desks increasing the total to 16 put in the entrance hall as well as a larger security area with more space for queues, which still only hit maximum at the peak summer times. The Murcia airport terminal was also painted a soft pink inside and alongside the plants, make sure that the airport is a pleasant enough place to enjoy your last few hours in Murcia.

Landside next to the check in desks of Murcia San Javier airport there is a café which is open during the regular operating hours of the airport, bigger toilet facilities, a gift shop that sells magazines and newspapers as well as a small kiosk just outside the airport that sells snacks and drinks and is a popular place for people to sit and enjoy the last rays of sunshine once they have checked in. Airside there is now much more seating, a duty-free shop, a sweet shop, a couple of gift shops, a small café and also a Subway sandwich bar, which is quite possibly the most popular addition to the airport.

Generally Murcia airport is very easy to get around and also easily located from the main roads and local towns and is also by far the nearest airport to all the Polaris World resorts. As an alternative, Alicante airport is approximately 50 minutes up the coast and is also easy enough to fly in to when visiting your Polaris World property. Alicante airport also offers a selection of Spanish car hire companies and again Polaris World Spain can offer the best value and choice for your Alicante car hire needs

Polaris World resorts have contributed greatly to the number of visitors to the region and this is expected to continue rising therefore we highly recommend you book your Polaris World car hire in advance.

To make the most of your time in Murcia the best form of travel is in the comfort of your own car and we have put together a sample of the areas of interest, most beautiful towns to visit, best places to go shopping and tastiest places to eat and how best to get around in your Polaris World hire car.

When arriving in the region of Murcia bear in mind that the city also shares the same name and can be found 47km away, straight along the carriageway the C-3319 from the airport and shouldn’t take you more than approximately 20 minutes to reach.

As Murcia airport is located on the coastline it is central to a network of roads and carriage ways that link the beaches to the cultural city of Murcia to the picturesque port town of Cartagena and back up to the airport. Nothing is too far away or too difficult to get to and so car hire in Murcia is the most suitable way forward and best mode of transport for your trip. The region of Murcia is bordered by Andalucia and Valencia which are in very comfortable driving distances for day trips outside of Murcia and as many of the Murcia car hire companies have agreements whereby the car can be left in secondary locations, you won’t have any excuse not to fly into Murcia, take in the Costa Tropical to the West, pass through the pretty Spanish villages in Almeria all the way down to the Costa del Sol.

Murcia is well known for its extensive beaches and vast expanses of sand that stretch all the way from the airport down to the port of Cartagena and to make everything perfectly accessible the coast road the AP7.

Given the proximity to Valencia, car hire at Murcia airport is also perfect for those heading North of Murcia and driving to Torrevieja from Murcia airport, for example, will only take you 23 minutes. So remember to book your Surrey driving lessons before your holiday this year so that you can also take charge on the Spanish roads.

Remember that if you choose to fly into Alicante there are also some superb Alicante car hire deals on offer as well. Alternatively, if you are looking to organise car transport Spain then visit our recommended partners at Car Shipping to Spain.
